Audubon Summer Programs

The 2012 Summer Camp Brochures

are now available!

Registration for all sessions begins March 1st.

The Sharon Audubon Center Summer Nature Programs offer week-long themed and general nature camps for children ages 3-17.  The programs have a small student to teacher ratio and are interactive, educational and lots of fun!  Each session includes outdoor exploration, hikes, live animal programs, hands-on activities and experiments, games and crafts, so there is something for everyone since children have a variety of interests.  The Sharon Audubon Center Summer Nature Program is a Connecticut state certified day camp.

Early Childhood Discovery

(for children ages 3-4 at time of camp)

This "Mommy and Me" type program brings parents and their young children together to jiggle, fiddle with and experience the outdoors in an interactive, yet safe way.  Activities and crafts focus on helping parents introduce their children to the wonders of the natural world through the use of the five senses, while providing parents with skills and project ideas that can be used long after the program is over. This program is great for those little first time campers! One or both parents must participate with children during this program.

Wee Explorers

(Campers entering Pre-K and Kindergarten in the fall.

Pre-K campers must be at least 4 years old at the time of camp)

Wee Explorers have the opportunity to choose from four different camp sessions this coming summer, including a new session called "All About Animals." Each Wee Explorer session meets for three hours a day and includes a variety of crafts, games and hands-on activities to make learning about nature easy and fun!

Explorers I

(Campers entering 1st or 2nd grade in the fall)

Explorers I campers also have four different camp sessions to choose from this summer, including two new sessions called "It's a Small World" and "Predators and Prey."  Explorers I campers meet for four hours each day, with the exception of "Wonders of Water" campers, who meet for six hours during this extended-day camp.

Explorers II

(Campers entering 3rd through 5th grades in the fall)

A little less game-playing and a little more project experimentation and responsibility make up the Explorer II sessions, although still a lot of fun!  This year, four sessions are being offered, including one new session called "Art of Nature II."   We introduced an Art of Nature camp to the Wee Explorers last summer and we had so much fun, we decided to expand it and offer it to our older group as well!  Another exciting new feature for the Explorer II campers this year is an overnight as part of our "Evening Explorations" camp!

Junior Naturalists

(Campers entering 6th through 8th grades in the fall)

Brand new last summer, our Budding Naturalists session for Junior Naturalists was a hit with those who attended and we're looking forward to another amazing session this year!   Campers will be learning a little about what it is like to be a Naturalist at the Sharon Audubon Center including wildlife rehabilitation, , land management, research and education. Students will learn about the Center's animals and wildlife found in CT, help with feedings and learn proper animal handling, spend some time in the rehabilitation clinic, help identify and pull invasive plant species from the Sanctuary, and even spend some time with our Wee Explorer Campers as we explore being environmental educators!

C.I.T. Program

(Campers entering 9th through 12th grades in the fall)

This Counselors-in-Training session is brand new for the summer of 2012.  It was created for students who have outgrown our oldest summer camp session but still have an interest in attending or helping with Audubon Sharon Summer Camp.  During this session, campers will be trained on some of the camp's most popular activities such as pond and stream scooping, identifying animals caught, and how to interact with younger campers.  After completing this week, campers may choose to come back to one other Audubon Camp this summer for free as a C.I.T. Summer Camp Staff to help out with a younger camp session.  Campers must be at least 14 years old at the time of their free session and second session must be approved by the Summer Camp Director.

There are so many exciting possibilities for this year’s Audubon Summer Programs, you won’t want to miss out on all the fun! Although many weeks are "themed," certain popular activities (such as a live bird presentation and pond exploration) are offered during every week.  Parents may register their child(ren) for one or multiple theme weeks, but spaces are filled on a first come, first served basis.  Each camp session is limited to 12 campers, but at times, depending on staff availability and the particular session, up to 15 students may be allowed.
